Overseas Nurses applying for registration in Australia must have current registration with an overseas Nurses’ registration board that is recognised as equivalent to an Australian Qualification.
By contacting the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (www.ahpra.gov.au) , you will be able to access the application forms necessary to apply for Nurses registration online.
You will need to provide information on the following:
- Verification of registration from the Nurses Board you are currently registered with. This must be sent directly from the Registration board, NOT the candidates.
- Be fit to practice. You must complete a statutory declaration to state whether or not you are able to; Speak English fluently, have a mental/physical condition, hold any criminal convictions, been declined registration previously, or are under any investigation.
- Provide an original Police certificate current within last six months
- ILETS of at least 7 where English is not the first language in the country that the candidate lives in.
- Provide evidence that you have studied and been examined in English in both secondary and tertiary education for 5 years to avoid sitting an IELTS exam
- Certificates that are required need to be certified by a; Solicitor/JP/Notary Public

VISAS:
457 Business Sponsorship Permit:
Once your Work Permit has expired, and you want to stay longer, you can work towards your Residency whilst on a 457 Business Sponsorship Visa. You need to present a job offer from your Australian employer and your current Australian registration. By holding this visa you must be employed by your sponsor on a permanent full time basis, and you are restricted to work for your sponsor only during the visa period.
Permanent Residency:
Permanent Residency (PR) allows you to reside and work in Australia indefinitely. This is if you have decided that you want to relocate permanently to Australia and now longer wish to return to your country of origin.
You will need to:
- Complete an expression of interest form which is based on a points system (most Healthcare professionals score high on points due to their qualifications and experience)
- You will need a job offer from a Australian employer
- Have a CXR and Medical performed.
- The submit your application for formal residency.
Working Holiday Visas:
These Visas are for people aged between 18-30 years who are looking to work and travel around Australia for a year. These are ideally for the use of those wishing to work to support their travel and only for a short term basis.
